Blood pressure is measured in terms of height of mercury column and is indicated as ‘mmHg’. Only your physician can decide what levels of blood pressure are normal for you. Following table, based on WHO recommendations, provides a general guideline

Note :

  • Blood pressure rises with age. In females both systolic and diastolic pressure shows slightly lower value compared to that in males.
  • The blood pressure depends on physical strain and psychological stress. it is observed that Exercising, Eating, smoking tend to raise blood pressure. So also emotion, excitement cause increase in systolic pressure.
  • Due to these reasons a single blood pressure measurement does not provide a precise picture. Only regular measurements, at least 4 times a day, over an extended period, can provide a meaningful blood pressure profile.
